Thanks to these extraordinary, environmental conditions, the area surrounding the lake was inhabited very early in history. Evidence of roman settlements were found in the caves of Catullo and Sirmione and near Desenzano del Garda. Countless artists were inspired by the outstanding beauty of the lake which has thus become more and more popular. The German poet Goethe lived in Limone and the Italian poet D’Annunzio has had his villa built in Gardone della Riviera. Nowadays, the villa is open to the public.
