The Versilia

Versilia is the name of the land between the Apuan Alps and the Thyrrenian coast from Cinquale to Lago di Massaciuccoli. The wide long fine sand beach is sheltered from the northern wind by the mountains.

From Lucca via Pisa to Vinci
Lucca: the historical centre, surrounded by a city-wall of 4 kilometres, can easily be visited in just one day. From the famous Piazza dell’Anfiteatro, where houses were built on the foundations of the Roman amphitheatre, you can reach the Torre Guinigi and the various sights. A pleasant walk along Via Fillungo, with its charming shop-windows, will round off the visit of the city.

Pisa: only a short walk from the worldwide famous Piazza dei Miracoli you will find Piazza dei Cavalieri with its impressive Palazzo dei Cavalieri. This building, now an exclusive university college was once the seat of the Knights of the Saint Stephen’s order. Visit the lively students’ quarter: here you will be able to see the second leaning tower of Pisa that leans abandoned towards San Nicola’s church.

Montecatini: the lively small town in the heart of Tuscany is best known as “the thermal Spa of Europe”. One of the most important Italian health resort, the health Spa of Montecatini is renowned for mud treatments, baths and inhalations. You can reach Montecatini Alto by funicular. The medieval village offers you a picturesque scenery.

Vinci: Vinci, a small village of the first middle ages, lays on a hill between Empoli e Firenze, completely surrounded by olive groves and vineyards. The 10th century castle “Guidi” accommodates the museum “Leonardiano”, dedicated to Leonardo da Vinci. The museum is worth a visit as it is well presented and sure to be a great experience. Here you can admire the numerous models built on Leonardo’s projects, all sorts of designs and singular machines as well as drafts and drawings are all clearly displayed to demonstrate the inventor’s ingeniousness. To complete, you can visit the birth place of Leonardo da Vinci only about 3 km from the museum.
Even without the omnipresent Leonardo, the narrow streets, the small houses and the charming landscapes make a short visit to Vinci a successful excursion.
